Mental health, reporting bias and economic transitions

Abstract Measures of mental health are heavily relied upon to identify at-risk individuals. However, self-reported metrics might be unduly affected by mis-reporting (perhaps stemming from stigma effects). In this article, we consider phenomenon focusing the using UK panel data 1991 2018. separate analyses males and females, examine how inaccurate reporting General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) measure, specifically its sub-components, can adversely affect distribution index. The analysis suggests that individuals typically over report their (especially so for males). results then used adjust GHQ-12 score take into account. We compare effects adjusted/unadjusted index when modelling a number important economic transitions. Using original leads an underestimate effect poor on transitions improved states, example, unemployment employment.
